# Using tables in workflows (/tables/using-in-workflows)

Use a [Table block](/integrations/table) for a read or write within a workflow. Use [workflow columns](/tables/workflow-columns) when the table should run the same work separately for each row.

## Classify and update rows [#classify-and-update-rows]

Create a `leads` table with `company`, `email`, `description`, `status`, `category`, and `score` columns. Use Number for `score` and Text for the other fields. Then build this sequence:

1. Set a Table block's **Operation** to **Query Rows**, choose the table, and filter for `status` equal to `unprocessed`.
2. Add a **For Each** [Loop](/workflows/blocks/loop) over `<table1.rows>`, replacing `table1` with your query block's name.
3. Inside the loop, configure an Agent to classify `<loop.currentItem.data.description>`. Request `category` and `score` using a valid [response-format schema](/workflows/blocks/agent).
4. Add **Update Row by ID** inside the loop. Use `<loop.currentItem.id>` as **Row ID** and valid JSON for **Row Data**:

```json
{
  "category": "<agent.category>",
  "score": "<agent.score>",
  "status": "qualified"
}
```

The references use your block names. Table writes can safely convert a numeric score string; still inspect the result if the Agent fails to produce the requested structure.

The status change keeps later runs from selecting completed rows. It does not claim a row atomically: overlapping workflow runs can query the same unprocessed row before either writes its result.

## Read rows [#read-rows]

Choose **Operation** and **Table** on each Table block. **Query Rows** returns an array whose cells are nested under each row's `data`:

```json
{
  "success": true,
  "rows": [
    {
      "id": "row_8f2c",
      "data": { "company": "Acme", "status": "unprocessed" },
      "executions": {},
      "position": 0,
      "createdAt": "2026-06-01T09:00:00Z",
      "updatedAt": "2026-06-01T09:00:00Z"
    }
  ],
  "rowCount": 1,
  "totalCount": 42,
  "limit": 1,
  "nextCursor": "cursor_from_the_query"
}
```

Read `<table1.rows[0].data.company>` for a cell or `<table1.rows[0].id>` for its row ID. `rowCount` counts rows in this response. `totalCount` counts all matches on the first page and may be `null` on subsequent cursor pages.

<OutputBundle
  blockName="table1"
  blockType="table_v2"
  blockColor="#10B981"
  duration="84ms"
  values="[
  {
    key: 'rows', type: 'array', highlight: true,
    children: [{
      key: '0', type: 'object',
      children: [
        { key: 'id', type: 'string', value: '"row_8f2c"' },
        { key: 'data', type: 'object', children: [
          { key: 'company', type: 'string', value: '"Acme"' },
          { key: 'status', type: 'string', value: '"unprocessed"' },
        ] },
      ],
    }],
  },
  { key: 'rowCount', type: 'number', value: '1' },
  { key: 'totalCount', type: 'number', value: '42' },
]"
/>

### Filter, order, and projection [#filter-order-and-projection]

Build **Filter** rules visually or supply a predicate. A condition names a field, operator, and value:

```json
{ "field": "status", "op": "eq", "value": "unprocessed" }
```

Combine conditions with `all` (AND) or `any` (OR), nesting groups for mixed logic:

```json
{
  "all": [
    { "field": "status", "op": "eq", "value": "unprocessed" },
    { "field": "createdAt", "op": "gte", "value": "2026-06-01" }
  ]
}
```

**Order** accepts a list of field/direction pairs, such as `[{"field":"createdAt","direction":"desc"}]`. **Columns to Return** selects the cells you need. Built-in `id`, `createdAt`, and `updatedAt` fields are managed by Sim and can be used for filtering and sorting.

Use **Get Row by ID** for a point lookup and **Get Schema** for column definitions. See the [Table block reference](/integrations/table) for all operators.

## Write and update rows [#write-and-update-rows]

| Operation | Behavior |
| - | - |
| **Insert Row** | Adds one row and returns its generated ID and timestamps. |
| **Batch Insert Rows** | Adds up to 1,000 rows from **Rows Data** and reports `insertedCount`. |
| **Upsert Row** | Inserts or updates a match on a unique column; `operation` is `insert` or `update`. |
| **Update Row by ID** | Patches only the supplied fields for one **Row ID**. |
| **Update Rows by Filter** | Applies one patch to matching rows; reports `updatedCount` and `updatedRowIds`. |
| **Delete Row by ID** | Removes the specified row and reports `deletedCount`. |
| **Delete Rows by Filter** | Removes matching rows and reports `deletedCount`. |

**Row Data** must be JSON with keys matching your column names. Do not include built-in IDs or timestamps on insert:

```json
{
  "company": "Acme",
  "email": "deals@acme.com",
  "description": "Enterprise software buyer",
  "status": "unprocessed"
}
```

Upsert requires a unique column. If the table has several, select **Conflict Column** to choose the match target. Unlisted fields remain unchanged in a partial update.

For different results per row, use a sequential Loop and **Update Row by ID**. A filter update applies the same values to every match; with no **Limit**, it walks all matches in batches. The 1,000 maximum applies to an explicitly supplied update limit, not the total for an unlimited filtered update.

Stored values follow the column types. Safe conversions are accepted, but unsupported optional values can become empty in workflow writes; public v2 API writes reject invalid values. Inspect writes rather than relying on every bad value producing an error. Deleting rows removes their data; API changes are outside the editor's undo history.

## Paginate large reads [#paginate-large-reads]

Set **Limit** for a bounded page. A page can end at that count or early when its row data reaches the byte budget, 5 MiB by default for bounded pages. Pass the returned `nextCursor` into **Cursor** until it is `null`. A short page does not establish completion.

Without **Limit**, the Table block requests all matches in one response and rejects results over the fixed 5 MiB row-data budget. Narrow the filter or paginate. This block behavior differs from the public API's default page size.

## Inspect a run [#inspect-a-run]

Use [Logs](/logs-debugging) to inspect the submitted filter, order, row data, returned rows, and affected counts when those details are available. If a query is empty or a write changes nothing, compare its resolved inputs with the table schema and stored values.

For a lookup during other work, query reference data mid-workflow—for example, a `pricing` table filtered by currency—then pass the result to the next step.
